Eua Island is a high island 40km off the south coast of Tongatapu. The island is excellent for hiking and is home to the largest tracts of virgin rain forest in Tonga. 'Eua is small enough to explore by foot or bike, but the favourite way of getting around is on horseback.
At the north end of the island is the splendid lookout at Anokula with views of dramatic 120 metre coastal cliffs along the inaccessible east coast. Between July and October, this is a great place for spotting whales close to shore on their way north to Vava'u. The west coast of 'Eua has a few small villages and family plantations and is the only place you'll find the beach, although swimmers should be very wary of dangerous currents. The main attraction of the island is The 'Eua National Park, 450 hectares of pristine tropical rainforest with exotic bird life (lorikeets, musk parrots, pacific pigeons, kingfishers and tropic sea birds all thrive here) trails to summits and solitude. If you like exploring caves, a guide could show you twenty in a day but on your own you'll be lucky to find one.
Getting to 'Eua is easy - it's just a 10-minute flight from Tongatapu or a 2 hour ferry ride across the often rough passage.
